What is content effort and why does it matter for Google rankings?

Creating content for your website is an important part of SEO, whether that’s writing blogs, adding service pages or updating existing information. Every page is an opportunity to answer questions, showcase your expertise and help potential customers find your business through Google. However, publishing more content doesn’t automatically mean better rankings.

Google wants to provide people with relevant, reliable information that answers their questions, so the quality of your content matters just as much as the topics you cover. One of the ways Google considers content quality is through something known as content effort.

Here’s what you need to know.

What is content effort?

Content effort refers to the thought, care and work that goes into producing content that’s genuinely useful to your audience. Google acknowledges this in its Search Quality Rater Guidelines, which consider effort alongside originality, talent and skill when assessing webpage quality.

This doesn’t mean spending hours writing every blog or making your articles as long as possible. It’s about whether you’ve considered what your audience needs and provided information that helps them, whether that’s through your own industry knowledge, practical examples or answers to questions other websites have overlooked.

Imagine you’re looking for advice on choosing new windows for your home. One website gives you a general overview of the types available, while another explains how different materials compare, what affects the cost and which options suit different properties. Both cover the same subject, but the second gives you more information to make an informed decision. That’s content effort in practice.

Why does content effort matter for Google rankings?

Google’s goal is to show people the most relevant and helpful results for their searches. After all, if people find what they’re looking for, they’re more likely to keep using Google.

Relevant keywords and topics help Google understand your page, but they don’t guarantee strong rankings. If your content repeats information already available on dozens of other websites, there’s little to distinguish it from the competition. Sharing genuine insight, practical advice or first-hand experience can give people a stronger reason to choose your page.

Google’s Search Quality Rater Guidelines recognise the effort, originality and skill of your writing when its assessing the quality. And, while content effort isn’t a confirmed standalone ranking factor or a guaranteed ranking boost, it reflects the qualities Google’s search systems aim to reward.

Why publishing more content isn’t always better

When you’re trying to improve your rankings, creating more pages can seem like an obvious way to get your business seen. Every new blog or landing page gives you another chance to appear for something your potential customers might be searching for. But it’s not really about how many pages you publish. It’s about how useful those pages are.

Each page should have a purpose, whether that’s answering a question, solving a problem or helping someone find the information they need. The more helpful and relevant your content is, the more value it offers to both your audience and search engines.

For example, if your business provides services across several locations, having dedicated pages for each area can be useful. You might include examples of nearby projects, details of the services available or answers to local questions. However, creating dozens of almost identical pages where only the town name changes offers little additional value. When you try to make your content applicable to everyone, you risk making it so broad that it doesn’t speak to anyone in particular.

The same applies to blogs. Publishing several articles answering slight variations of the same question may be less effective than one well-written guide covering everything your customers need to know. Instead, it’s best to give each page a clear purpose, rather than just adding more content to increase your page count.

AI and content effort

AI can be an incredibly useful tool for creating website content, helping you research topics, plan articles, develop drafts and improve existing pages. When you’ve already got the knowledge and information to guide it, AI can make the process more efficient without compromising on quality.

Problems can arise when you use AI to generate large volumes of content just to fill your website. Producing dozens of blogs or landing pages might be quick, but publishing them with little editing, proofreading or original input risks leaving you with generic content that’s much like what AI could produce for anyone asking similar questions.

Google doesn’t automatically view AI-generated content as lower quality. What matters is the finished result. AI can also produce inaccurate or outdated information, so checking the facts, adding your experience and making sure the content reflects your business are essential.

Used responsibly, AI and content effort can work hand in hand.

What does good content effort look like in practice?

You don’t need to carry out extensive research or come up with a completely new perspective for every page. Often, the best place to start is with the knowledge and experience your business already has.

Think about the questions your team answers every week. You might regularly explain product differences, discuss pricing or help customers choose the right service. These conversations are valuable starting points for content, giving you the opportunity to share your expertise with potential customers before they’ve even contacted you.

You can also draw on previous projects, common challenges and practical recommendations to make your content more informative. Original data, photographs, case studies and real examples can all help readers understand what to expect and give them greater confidence in your business from the outset.

How you present that information is equally important. Someone looking for a quick answer shouldn’t have to work through paragraphs of unnecessary detail, while a customer considering an expensive purchase may need a more thorough explanation. The right approach depends on what your audience is looking for.

How to make your content work harder for your business

Before publishing a new page, think about what you want it to achieve. Are you answering a common customer question, explaining a service or helping someone make a purchasing decision? Having a clear purpose makes it easier to create content that supports your SEO strategy and wider business goals.

It’s also worth reviewing your existing content before starting something new. Updating an older page with clearer information, relevant examples or more useful advice is oftentimes more effective than adding another article covering similar ground. Plus, it shows Google that you’re active, up-to-date and on top of the information you’re putting out for your customers.

Ultimately, it’s about making sure the time and resources you invest in your content are being put to good use.
