Put your SEO to work this winter

If spring and summer are your busiest months, getting to September can feel like a chance to ease off. You’ve made it through the rush, demand is starting to settle and next spring feels a long way away. You might even be wondering whether it makes sense to keep investing in SEO when fewer customers are searching for what you offer.

But the quieter months can be some of the most valuable for SEO. You’ve just come through the season that matters most to your business, giving you fresh data on what customers searched for, which parts of your website performed well and where opportunities may have been missed.

You’ve also got something you won’t have once spring arrives — time. Time to make improvements, give Google a chance to pick them up and see what works before your next busy season gets underway.

Why keep working on SEO when your busy season is over?

When fewer people are looking for your products or services, it’s easy to think SEO can wait until demand starts picking up again. The problem is that waiting until then means starting the work at exactly the point you want it to be paying off.

If your enquiries usually begin climbing in March and stay strong throughout spring and summer, by March you want customers to already be finding you. You don’t want to be creating missing service pages, reorganising product categories or only just figuring out which searches you should be appearing for.

SEO changes need time to make a difference. New pages need to be found and understood by Google, while improvements to existing pages can take time to show their full impact. Starting that work in autumn gives it several months to build momentum, so you’re getting ahead rather than playing catch-up when customers return.

Let this year’s searches guide next year’s strategy

One of the best places to start is with the season you’ve just had. Rather than guessing what customers might search for next spring, you already have months of real search data showing you what they were interested in this year.

You might find that a particular product attracted far more searches than expected, or that customers use completely different language to describe one of your services. There could be searches where you appeared regularly but attracted very few clicks, or demand for something you offer but barely mention on your website.

Imagine you sell garden products and composite fencing was particularly popular this summer. You stock plenty of it, but online it’s tucked away inside a much broader fencing category. If your search data shows people are specifically looking for composite fencing, there’s a clear opportunity to give it more prominence with its own category and stronger content before those searches start increasing again.

Look at where your website held you back

Knowing what people searched for is useful, but the next question is whether your website did a good enough job of meeting that demand.

Perhaps customers were searching for a service you offer, but the only information about it is buried on a general services page. Maybe one of your most popular product ranges sits inside a huge category that’s difficult to browse. You could also have pages appearing regularly in Google without giving people enough reason to click.

Some of those gaps might need new pages or categories, while others could be improved with better content, stronger internal links or a clearer next step. This is where it helps to think about SEO as more than rankings. Getting somebody onto your website is only half the job — once they arrive, you need to make it easy for them to buy, request a quote or get in touch.

Tackle the jobs that got pushed aside in summer

When you’re in the middle of your busiest period, making changes to your website probably isn’t high on the agenda. You’re dealing with customers, enquiries, orders and everything else that comes with peak season. Once things settle down, you have more room to look at the jobs that kept getting pushed down the list.

Websites naturally grow and change over time. Product categories that once made sense can become overcrowded, new services get added without proper pages of their own and important parts of the business can end up several clicks away from anywhere customers are likely to find them.

There may be technical work waiting too. Broken links, outdated redirects, poor internal linking and pages Google struggles to access can all hold a website back. Autumn and winter give you a much better opportunity to sort those issues than trying to squeeze them in halfway through your busiest few months.

Give your changes time to prove themselves

Doing the work earlier also means you have time to see how it performs before the pressure is on.

A new page might begin appearing for searches you hadn’t considered. An improved category could start gaining more visibility, while another page might not respond as well as expected and need another look. Instead of making changes just before peak season and hoping for the best, you can learn from what happens and keep refining things.

By the time spring rolls around, you’ve had the chance to learn from last season, make improvements and see how Google responds. Rather than suddenly switching SEO back on because customers are searching again, you’ve kept things moving in the background so you’re better prepared when those searches matter most.

Don’t wait until spring to start thinking about spring

If spring and summer bring in a big chunk of your business for the year, autumn isn’t the time to forget about SEO. It’s the time to use what you’ve learned from your busiest months and work out what could put you in a stronger position next time around.

That could mean finding searches you nearly captured, giving an important product or service more prominence, improving pages that underperformed or tackling technical issues you didn’t have time for during summer. It also means looking at the whole journey, so when more people do find you next spring, your website is ready to turn that attention into enquiries and sales.
