Why customer reviews are one of your most valuable trust signals

Turn Great Reviews Into Better Results review-featured

Trust is a big part of how people make decisions online. Before someone buys from you or gets in touch, they want to know that your business is legitimate, that your product or service does what you say it will and that other people have had a good experience.

That’s why we’ve been having more conversations with our clients about reviews recently.

A good collection of genuine customer reviews can do far more than give you a five-star rating to display on your website. Reviews can influence whether someone clicks on your advert, help them decide between you and a competitor, answer questions they have about a product or service and give you real customer experiences to use throughout your marketing.

At 21Digital, everything we do supports one of three stages of digital growth: Acquire. Convert. Storytelling. Trust is integral to all three. It gives people the confidence to click when they first discover you, helps remove doubt when they’re deciding whether to buy or enquire, and gives your customers the confidence to tell others what you do well.

Reviews are one of the clearest and easiest ways to build and show that trust — here’s why.

How reviews can improve your paid advertising

Let’s start with acquisition. Before you can convert someone into a customer, you first have to get them through the door.

Think about what happens when someone searches for a product or service on Google. They might see several businesses offering pretty much the same thing, so what makes them choose one over another? Sometimes, it’s the little things. Seeing a strong review rating alongside your advert can give someone an immediate bit of reassurance. Other people have used your business, they’ve had a good experience and they’ve taken the time to say so. That can be enough to make someone think, “They look good, I’ll have a look.”

This is where things like Google Seller Ratings can help. On eligible Search Ads, Google can show your star rating, number of reviews and other information about your business. So, when someone is scanning through a page of adverts, your reviews can help you stand out and give them another reason to click your advert rather than the one next to it.

And that trust shouldn’t disappear the moment they click. If someone has chosen your business because your reviews gave them confidence, it makes sense to keep that reassurance going when they land on your website. Bringing customer reviews and feedback into your landing pages and other important parts of your site gives people another reason to feel comfortable taking that next step.

How reviews support your visibility online

Reviews also play a part in the bigger picture when it comes to getting your business found online.

You’ve heard of SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation. Put simply, it’s the work that helps your website appear when someone searches Google for the products or services you offer. Then there’s AEO, or Answer Engine Optimisation, which is about helping your business show up when people use tools such as ChatGPT or Gemini to ask questions, compare businesses or look for recommendations.

Reviews aren’t going to magically push your website to the top of Google, and having hundreds of them doesn’t mean ChatGPT is suddenly going to recommend you. There’s a lot more that goes into both. What reviews can do is add another piece to the picture by showing that your business is real, established and has actually helped people.

That links to something you might have heard us mention called E-E-A-T. It stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness, but you don’t really need to remember the acronym. The idea is simple. Search engines want to see evidence that you know what you’re talking about, have experience in what you do and can be trusted. Reviews are one way of showing that because they come from the people who have actually dealt with your business, rather than from you telling everyone how good you are.

The same idea is becoming increasingly important as people use AI to research businesses. If someone asks ChatGPT or Gemini to recommend a company, it can look at information from across the web to build an answer. Your website is only one part of that picture. Reviews and your wider reputation on platforms like REVIEWS.io and Trustpilot give both potential customers and these platforms more information about who you are and what other people have experienced.

So, reviews aren’t a shortcut to better rankings, but they are part of the wider picture. They help build the trust around your business that makes it easier for people, search engines and AI tools to understand who you are and whether you’re worth considering.

Reviews can help someone choose you

Getting the click is only half the job. Once someone lands on your website, they still have to decide whether they trust you enough to take the next step.

Your website can tell someone what you do, what you sell and why you think they should choose you. A review gives them something different. It shows them what it was actually like for someone else who chose your business.

For a service business, that might be hearing that you were responsive, knowledgeable or simply easy to deal with. For an eCommerce business, the questions can be much more specific. Was the product the right size? Did it arrive when they expected it to? Was the quality as good as they hoped? Did it actually do what they bought it for?

Those are often the things people are wondering when they’re deciding whether to buy or enquire. One person might be thinking, “Can I trust this company?” while another is looking at a product and wondering, “Is this actually going to work for me?”

A good review can help answer those questions because it comes from someone who has already made the decision they’re trying to make.

That’s also why we wouldn’t recommend putting all your reviews on one testimonials page and leaving them there. If reviews are helping people make decisions, they need to be where those decisions are happening. That might be on a service page, next to a particular product, on a landing page or close to a form or enquiry button.

The right review can answer questions your sales copy simply can’t.

Your reviews are also a source of content

There’s also another reason we think you should pay attention to the reviews you’re collecting. They give you something that can be surprisingly difficult to create yourself: your customers’ own words.

Read through enough reviews and you’ll start to notice things you might not have thought to say about your business. Someone might explain why they chose you, what problem they were trying to solve or the part of your service that made the biggest difference to them. Sometimes, they’ll pick up on something you’ve never even considered a selling point. Even if they’re just singing your praises for being helpful and friendly.

Reviews are useful for more than building trust. They can tell you what your customers actually value, and give you ideas for how to talk about your business in a way that reflects what matters to them.

You can also take those words and use them across your marketing. A great review could feature in an advert, sit alongside a service on your website, be included in an email campaign, social media post or even give you the starting point for a case study. You’re not having to guess what your customers want to hear because they’ve already told you.

And because it comes from a real customer, it doesn’t sound like marketing copy. It’s someone explaining what they experienced in their own words.

That’s why we see reviews as more than a collection of star ratings. They’re real customer stories, and they can help show the next person what choosing your business is actually like.

Don’t leave collecting reviews to chance

If reviews can influence acquisition, conversion and the way you tell your story, they shouldn’t be something you collect only when a customer happens to leave one. Having a consistent process for asking for feedback gives you a much better chance of building a steady collection of reviews over time.

The important thing is that your reviews reflect the experiences of your customers. The goal isn’t to collect five stars for the sake of it. It’s to understand what your customers think, make that feedback visible and use it where it can help someone else make a decision.

You may even learn a few things along the way too. Your customers might highlight something you’re doing particularly well, or point out an area where you could do better. You can take that feedback, make changes where they’re needed and keep improving the experience. Then those improvements become part of the next customer’s experience, and the whole thing starts to feed back into itself.

Collecting reviews is one thing. Making sure they actually work across your marketing is another.

At 21Digital, we can help you get your review platform properly set up and integrated with your website and wider marketing. That could mean adding review widgets to product or service pages, implementing structured data so search engines can understand your ratings and making sure your best feedback is seen where it can make a difference.

When your reviews are properly connected to your digital activity, they just stop sitting on a review platform waiting for someone to find them and start supporting your paid advertising, strengthening your online presence and giving potential customers the reassurance they need to choose your business.
