What is GEO and how can it help your business appear in AI search?

These days, it feels like the way we search for information online is constantly changing. Google is still one of the go-to places for finding businesses, products and services, but more and more people are also turning to AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews to get the answers they’re looking for. It’s not hard to see why, either. Rather than scrolling through pages of search results and jumping between websites, you can ask a question and get a detailed answer in seconds, making it quicker and easier to research products, compare services and find recommendations.

If you’re a business owner, it’s worth thinking about what this means for you and how you can keep up with the way your customers are searching. Otherwise, you could be missing out on opportunities without even realising it. Get it right, though, and you’ve got another way to put your business in front of potential customers, reach people who might not have found you otherwise, and build on the work you’re already doing with SEO. It just takes a slightly different approach.

That’s where Generative Engine Optimisation, or GEO, comes in.

What is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation, which might sound a little complicated, but the idea behind it is fairly simple. It’s all about making sure your business has a better chance of being mentioned, featured, or recommended when someone uses AI to search for information.

You’ll likely already be familiar with Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), which helps your website appear on Google when people search for products or services like yours. GEO works in a similar way, building on many of the same principles, but with more focus on how AI tools find, understand, and use information to put together their answers.

Let’s say someone’s looking for a new kitchen. Normally, they might search Google for kitchen suppliers in their area and spend some time browsing different websites.

With AI search, they can be much more specific, asking for recommendations based on things like:

  • Where they live
  • How much they want to spend
  • The style they’re looking for
  • What would best suit their space and layout

AI can then bring together a shortlist of businesses that might suit their needs, along with some advice to help them decide.

Now, imagine your business is one of those recommendations. You’re getting in front of someone who’s already looking for what you offer, without them ever having to search for your business by name.

How is GEO different from SEO?

With traditional SEO, you’re trying to get your website appearing higher up in Google’s search results. GEO works a little differently. Rather than focusing on where your website ranks, it’s about making sure AI tools can find information about your business, understand what you offer and include you in the answers they give people.

That means someone might discover your business without ever seeing it in a traditional list of search results. Instead, an AI tool could mention your brand, recommend one of your products or use information from your website to answer their question.

Now, that doesn’t mean you can forget about SEO. Far from it! A lot of what helps your website perform well in Google, such as having useful content, a well-organised website and a trustworthy online presence, also plays an important role in AI search. If AI tools can’t easily find or understand information about your business, they’re going to have a harder time including you in their answers.

Think of GEO as building on the SEO work you’re already doing, rather than replacing it. You’re giving your business another opportunity to be found as the way people search continues to change.

How can GEO help your business appear in AI search?

There are three main ways GEO can help get your business noticed in AI search, whether that’s getting your website content featured in an answer, having your business recommended or helping customers discover your products.

H3 Making your content easier for AI to understand

For AI to use information from your website, it first needs to be able to find it and understand what it’s about. Having clear, well-organised content makes that easier and gives your website a better chance of being referenced when someone asks a relevant question.

Let’s say you’ve written a guide explaining the different types of home insulation and which ones work best for different properties. If someone asks ChatGPT a question about insulation, your guide could be used as a source to help answer it, especially if you’ve included useful explanations, accurate information and examples that go beyond what’s already available elsewhere.

It’s another reason why content quality matters. You want to give people useful answers to the questions they’re asking, rather than filling your pages with keywords in the hope of ranking higher.

H3 Helping AI recognise and recommend your business

Getting your content referenced is one thing, but what about getting AI to recommend your business itself? That’s another area where GEO can help.

Imagine someone asks an AI tool to recommend a local company offering a particular service. Rather than giving them a list of websites to browse, it might suggest a handful of businesses and explain what each one offers or why they could be worth considering.

For your business to have a chance of appearing in those recommendations, AI needs to be able to find reliable information about who you are and what you do. Your website is a good starting point, but it’s not the only place AI tools can look. Customer reviews, mentions on other reputable websites and consistent business information across the internet can all help establish your reputation and give AI a clearer understanding of your business.

It’s worth remembering that what other people are saying about your business online can be just as important as what you’re saying about yourself.

H3 Helping customers discover your products

If you sell products online, GEO can also help you reach customers who are using AI to research what they want to buy. Instead of spending time browsing different retailers and comparing products themselves, people can now ask AI to do some of that work for them.

For example, someone looking for a new washing machine could ask for the best options within their budget, with particular features or a certain energy rating. AI can then suggest products that match what they’re looking for and explain how they compare, helping them narrow down their choices.

This is where the information on your product pages becomes important. Having accurate descriptions, clear specifications, up-to-date pricing, availability and customer reviews makes it easier for AI tools to understand what you’re selling and whether it’s a good match for someone’s requirements.

What can you do to improve your GEO?

If you’re already working on your SEO, you’ve got a good starting point for GEO too. Many of the things that help your website perform well in traditional search also make it easier for AI tools to find and understand your business.

Start by taking a look at your website from a customer’s point of view. Is it clear what you offer, who you help, and what makes your business different? Think about the questions customers regularly ask and whether your content gives them useful answers. If there’s information missing, that’s a good place to start making improvements.

It’s also worth checking how your business shows up elsewhere online. Making sure your details are consistent, encouraging genuine customer reviews and getting mentioned on trusted websites can all help build a stronger online presence.

Social media plays a part too. Keeping your profiles active and taking the time to respond to customer questions, complaints and feedback shows people that you’re engaged and care about their experience.

If you sell products online, make sure your descriptions, specifications, prices and availability are accurate and up to date. This helps customers make decisions while giving AI tools reliable information to use when recommending products.

Of course, there’s no guarantee your business will appear in every AI-generated answer. However, by making your website and wider online presence as clear, useful and trustworthy as possible, you’re giving yourself a better chance of being found by potential customers.
