Day in the Life: Lucy Walker, Graphic Designer
Our Day in the Life series gives you a sneak peek of what our creatives, digital marketing and developers get up to here at 21Digital. Today we’re introducing you to Lucy Walker, our Graphic Designer (and resident Harry Potter geek)!
8:30am – Getting off to a flying start
I know it’s almost a bit of a cliché, but honestly one of the things I love most about life at 21Digital is that it’s so different from one day to the next. It keeps things interesting, but challenging too.
Before I do anything, I start each day by going through my diary, making quick decisions about which tasks to prioritise, and which can wait until the afternoon. Occasionally I’ll double-check with Steven, our Creative Director, to find out if there have been any changes or new developments with any specific projects overnight.
Most recently I’ve been working on a print project: the brochure for a designer bathroom brand. There’s a lot of different aspects to the project, so I’ve got to consider imagery, typography, colour and layout, and – crucially – how they all fit together, and how they communicate the client’s offering.
12pm – Keeping the creativity flowing
At around 12pm I’ll head down to our studio breakout area, and settle in for a bit. People come and go through there all throughout lunch, depending on if they’ve got meetings or quick errands to run, so most of the time I’ve got company. On the few occasions I’m on my own, I like to spend the time on Pinterest and Issuu, which gives me a bit of inspiration for my own projects.
After lunch I put some time aside to handle any small requests I’ve had from other team members, like creating icons or resizing images for web projects. The most recent social media campaigns are something I’ve been particularly proud of, and seeing the images I’ve created go out on official client accounts is still an amazing feeling.
2pm – A new project begins
Today brings a brand new project to start work on, a new website for one of our longstanding interiors clients. Home & Garden, together with Automotive, makes up our key client sectors here at 21Digital, so my experience with these gives me a helpful headstart on the research process.
Once I’ve got my initial ideas sorted, I present them to Steven, our Creative Director, who gives me a few pieces of feedback. Over the next few hours, I gradually start implementing Steven’s feedback to my ideas, and that’s what I’m doing when the clock hits 5:30.
By the time I get home, I’m ready to snuggle with the one I love most. (And once the cat’s settled down with me, my boyfriend might get a look-in, too.) Game of Thrones has obviously now finished, but we’re both already watching Nightflyer, which is based on another George R.R. Martin book. #Geek!
